Components and Adjustments
Kasko, Ookpik and Ookpik Duo rudder
The rudder is optional on the Kasko, Ookpik and Ookpik Duo models. Although much smaller, it can prove very useful in both inclement weather conditions and calm waters.
Our rudders are made of sturdy anodized aluminium. Stainless steel cables used in the production of BORÉALDESIGN kayaks made before 2006 are wider in diameter than those used by our competitors. As a result, our kayaks withstand wear and tear longer and resist greater pressure exerted in strong winds and currents. |

BORÉALDESIGN innovates again by replacing the traditional steel cable by a strong Spectra® rope. The latter can withstand pressure up to 600 lb. Spectra® offers many advantages:
- Does not rust
- Glides without friction on the screws that link it up to the rudder
- Flexible, it does not get jammed
- Easily and quickly replaced, without need for a tool
- Compact and light

To lower the rudder into the water, first settle into your seat, then grasp the cord in the starboard (right) cleat located a short distance behind the paddler and pull upward. If the rudder does not drop by itself, alternately press each pedal. Movement and gravity will cause the rudder to drop. However, if the rudder fails to descend, check the support screw holding the blade in place. It may be too tight. Vibration during shipping from the plant to the dealer may have caused the screw to tighten. A quarter-turn is usually sufficient to release the rudder.
As is the case of other BORÉALDESIGN kayaks, you need only press the right pedal to turn right while paddling and the left pedal to turn left. To track straight, position your feet equally.
Reminder: Replace the rudder cord in the cleat after your outing is over to prevent the blade from hitting the hull during transportation.
